More About “An Extra Flake”

I love the wisdom of Winnie the Pooh, who says practical things like, “When late morning rolls around and you’re feeling a bit out of sorts, don’t worry; you’re probably just a little eleven o’clockish. If you know the story, you’ll remember that just before 11 o’clock, Winnie is ready for a “little smackerel” — a snack that makes the rest of the day go better.

When I find myself with that restless, almost-grouchy feeling, I try to recalibrate, to remember that I am okay and my day is okay. God still loves me. I may just need a little smackerel.

Of course, horse people always see life through a lens that involves horses. When our horses are anxious about a buddy leaving, cooped up because of bad weather, or just restless in the trailer, we give them an extra flake of hay to settle their nerves or tide them over.

I think that people need “extra flakes,” like snacks for the spirit.

Five days a week I’ll develop a short email with an uplifting scripture or quote. Each “Flake” will usually take less than a minute to read. These Extra Flakes aren’t whole meals, but insights, uplifting ideas, kitchen-table horse-related wisdom, prayers, and Scripture or quotes. I’ll work hard to put long thoughts into short words.

Most days, the Extra Flake will be my writing. Other days, I’ll invite someone who has a good insight to serve up the snack. In these days of rapid change, stress, and high activity, we need help to understand what’s happening and our place in it, to remind ourselves that our purpose is bigger than our frustrations, and that even small kindnesses matter. I am hoping that An Extra Flake is one of those kindnesses.
