Equine Insights, Helpful Tips, and Words of Encouragement

I'm looking forward to visiting with you in this “blog.” I'd love to hear your thinking on these topics. Just send me an email. Together we can explore some of the subtleties that make our life with horses so engaging and inspiring.

Visit my “Carrots for Courage” blog on myhorse.com

Some months ago, the website that is home base for four magazines — Perfect Horse, The Trail Rider, Spin to Win Rodeo, and Horse Journal — asked me to blog on their site, and several of my regular Inspired by Horses readers have asked me how to find it. You can read “Carrots for Courage” on myhorse.com. “Carrots” is consistent with my theme of helping people to develop faith and confidence through their horse connection. Feel free to share the link. Let me know how you like it, and any topics you’d like to see me write on. Thanks for reading. Maureen

You Don't Have to Dance to be a Trainer

Have you wondered if you'll ever be good at using body language to talk to your horse? Don't worry. Just be yourself.

Over the course of many years of watching various horse trainers, I've come to appreciate the trainers who are just themselves, who don't do what I call, “the trainer's dance.”

Are you Focused, or “On the Muscle”?

There's an old racehorse term that I find helpful in describing human behavior as well as equine. A horse is said to be “on the muscle” when he's ready to race. His adrenaline is pumping and he knows something big is about to happen.

I'm Sending My Inner Critic Packing

Recently I audited a Centered Riding Instructors clinic, taught by Sue Harris. If you get the chance to ride with Sue or attend a clinic she's teaching, take advantage of it. She's not only a gifted teacher, she's a genuinely nice person, and has well honed her craft. You “can't not” learn something valuable while you're there.

At a previous clinic, I had heard her tell people to send their “inner critic” on a trip. But something about hearing it this time clicked with me....

So Who Is the Best?

I'm wondering if there's any such thing as “the best.” For years, I worked hard at becoming the best. It's certainly not that I wanted to look down my nose at anyone. It's that I wanted to be right, to feel good about myself and my accomplishments, and everyone always encouraged me to be “the best.” Of course, with a goal that vague, I was doomed to failure. ...
