Meet Rex Gallatin

Whatever does a horn player have to do with horses? As you might have guessed, the horn player is my husband, Rex. And the art of playing great music has a lot in common with the art of horsemanship. In fact, as we talk about concepts, like beauty or glory, one of us will speak in terms of sound and the other in terms of motion.

Rex will talk about shaping a sound in a particular passage, for instance, in the way I might talk about shaping a series of steps in a horse's workout.

I may talk about how important it is for a horse to have lightness in his steps, and how that doesn't come when the horse is feeling stressed or pushed. Rex will talk about lightness and fluidity in a song, and how the right sound doesn't come when you're pushing for it. Both must be allowed to rise as if being supported invisibly.

And on it goes. So within the pages of my blog or other writings, you'll hear Rex's influence and the result of years of enjoying the journey toward making music, making magic, with horses and horns.
