About Maureen
It's been said that Maureen is like Mapquest — she helps you figure out how to get to where you want to go. Other people describe her as a life coach through the grid of horsemanship. A friend described Maureen's brand of practical insight as “a bridge between horsemanship and humanship.” However you translate that, Maureen is passionate about good horsemanship and about helping people to navigate the trail of life and faith. She has a unique brand of wisdom and warmth, humor and horsemanship that is inspirational and encouraging, and she can help you to make sense of things. Maureen has been a horse lover from the earliest days sitting on her mother's lap looking at a book about ponies. She believes that one of the reasons God made horses was so that He could speak to and comfort horsepeople at a heart-to-heart level. Though she didn't grow up in a horsey family, Maureen told her parents early on that she was going to teach people to ride, and she's been doing that in one form or another for the last 35 years. While in college, she did an independent study project about how adults learn to ride, because even then she was convinced that adults learn differently from children, yet most riding instructors learned to ride as children and teach adults that same way. Thus began her serious study about how and why people are drawn to horses, and the natural connection about how horses can help people. One of the major themes has been how working with horses can help people to develop life skills, such as confidence and faith. Over the years, she's taught horsemanship in lots of different forms from hands-on lessons to consulting and coaching trainers and riding instructors. She has extensive writing and marketing background in the horse industry, and was the marketing director for an equestrian book publisher. A recent significant accomplishment was 10 years as executive editor for John Lyons' Perfect Horse magazine. She started from ground zero — no subscribers — and built it to a circulation of over 100,000 as a subscriber-supported publication — unheard of in the equine industry. In addition to editing the magazine, Maureen wrote most of John's how-to horse-training and inspirational material (John Lyons is a well-known horse trainer with a national following). In 2006, the magazine converted to a full-color, ad-driven publication and Maureen stepped out of the editor's seat to develop www.InspiredByHorses.com. She currently writes and speaks to various groups on the topics of faith and horses, developing confidence as a rider, and life and relationship skills. She consults for individual riders and professionals, helping them to weave together the various pieces of their horsemanship picture to to communicate more clearly and effectively with their horse.
