Train your horse to stand quietly while someone hands you a water bottle
Those of us who ride horses know it’s easy to get dehydrated. We’re busy. We’re preoccupied with working with the horse. Dehydration is one of those things that can sneak up on you. To prevent that happening, be proactive this summer.
* Keep a cooler handy in the barn, even if you have a refrigerator. Cool water, but not cold, is sometimes the most refreshing.
* Freeze some water bottles overnight, and fill others each morning. Put them all in the cooler. The frozen ones will keep the others at just the right temperature.
* When you feel yourself getting grouchy or a headache coming on, you’ve likely gotten too hot or had too little to drink. Take a break.
In typical horse-person fashion, we don’t seem to have trouble making sure our horses have plenty to drink. But taking care of ourselves is sometimes a different matter.
